There are six traditional dances a dancer probably ( should ) know. There's the hornpipe, heavy jig, light jig, hop jig (can be called single jig), the reel, and the slip jig. The hornpipe and heavy jig are danced with hard shoes. Hard shoes are like tap shoes, but have fiber glass tips. The slip jig, hop jig, light jig, and reel are danced in soft shoes or gillies. Gillies are, in a way, like Ballet shoes. but dont have points and are black I hope this helped.
Irish Dance tunes fall under the categories of reels, jigs, or hornpipes. If you are looking for something more upbeat then you want reels. I would recomend slip jigs if you want something soft and pretty, "The Butterfly" is a good example. Many of the more appealing songs are set dances. Some of my favorite are "King of the Fairies", "Blue Eyed Rascal", and "The Downfall of Paris". If you want a fun song to dance to then try "Cotton Eyed Joe" by the Chieftains.

Irish dancing has been around for hundreds or possibly thousands of years, and there are many different dances and steps that are constantly being renewed and changed, so to answer your question nobody will probably ever know, and it was probably not just one person, as everyone puts their own little twist on what dances are available now.
