The Filipino traditional itik-itik dance is performed in a three quarters rhythm: 1 2 3 / 1 2 3. A dancer begins by stepping out with the heel of one foot while taking two small steps toward the starting foot. The footwork is very choppy and repetitive. Each step lies on a beat. The dancer must push out her hips opposite from her starting point on count 1 and bring it back to center for counts 2 and 3. The arms are extended with one arm above shoulder level and the other below shoulder level. The arms flap to shoulder level ticking on every count. There is an obvious tilt in the head towards one shoulder on count 1. The dancer can also sway a waltz step while extending her arms from side to side with fluttering fingers. Itik-itik is performed as an exciting imitation of ducklings.
Folk dance steps vary from region to region. There is the Itik-Itik, which reminds the watcher of a duck's movements. Then there is the Tinikling dance, where dancers move and hop over bamboo poles until someone messes up. The Sayaw as Bangko shows off the dancer's balance as they dance atop a bench. The Binasuan is usually present at weddings and other festivities. The Pandanggo as Ilaw again shows balance as the dancer balances oil lamps in each hand and on the head while dancing moves similar to the Spanish Fandango. Many other dances include the Pandanggo Oasiwas, the Maglalatik, the Kuratsa, La Jota Moncadena, and the Kappa Malong-Malong.

Itik-itik - According to history of this dance, a young woman named Kanang (short for Cayetana) happened to be the best performer in the province of Surigao del Norte. At one baptismal reception, she was asked to dance the Sibay, and began improvising her steps in the middle of her performance imitating the movements of an "itik", a duck, as it walks with choppy steps and splashes water on its back while attracting its mate. Because of its unusual steps and fascinating interpretation, the audience began imitating her.
