If you are asking how many years until the remake. That I am not sure of. I heard some rumors of there being a remake, but I pray to God that they ARE NOT TRUE. West Side Story is one of those classic untouchable movies. It's in the category with Gone with the Wind and perhaps even The Seven Year Itch. If they remade it, today's society would ruin everything the movie is about. I believe if they remade it, they would add more violence and make the dances, club scenes. The movie would become racey and I don't think that it would compare to the original... At all.

look at this shot
After try-outs in Washington, DC and Philadelphia beginning in August 1957 the original Broadway production opened on September 26, 1957. The movie was released in 1961.
The name for the movie was always West Side Story. The original title for the stage version when it was first conceived (in the 40's not long after WWII) was East Side Story. The story line was to follow a Jewish girl and a Catholic boy around Easter/Passover. By the time the collaborators got around to actually writing the show though, that story line was no longer as relevant as when they had originally conceived it. After reading an article in the news paper about the prevalence of gang violence and the increase of the Puerto Rican population the collaborators decided to change it to what it is now (more or less), including the title to West Side Story.
In the beginning of West Side story, the story begins. LOL.

West Side Story was extremely successful as a movie, and, imo, one of the few musicals that was spectacularly successful on screen as well as on stage.

There was a remake of the traditional Romeo and Juliet in 1996 of the same name. It gave the plot a modern day makeover.
