[SOMEWHAT SPOILER]

Friar Lawrence's plan was to give Juliet a vial to drink. It would put her in a deep sleep and she'd appear as dead, so her family would put her in the Capulet Family Tomb. The Friar was going to send Romeo a letter explaining this plan so that he may go to the tomb later at night so when she awoke from her sleep they could walk away and live life together again, but sadly the letter did not send and his plan backfired. In the end they both die a tragic death.

Their marriage was valid in the church, but it would also have been considered illicit from the standpoint of the law. His grand plan to bring peace to the families blew up in his face, and now he has a choice between committing a sin by marrying Juliet to Paris, or TELLING, and telling would probably get him into some trouble. He can't do either one, so he comes up with another grand plan to fake Juliet's death.
