ON my 92 sundance the sensor is located on the side of the themostat housing. It also controls the cooling fan. If it quits, start the car let it warm up and unplug the sensor at the housing. If the fan comes on the sensor is bad.
I had replaced the water pump and radiator. This had continued to overheat but not as bad. After replacing the head gasket it was finally fixed. I was able to answer my own question only after replacement.

When you replace the timing belt you should replace the water pump and tensioner pulley as well. It may save you in labor costs down the road. But, all together it is about $500.

have never worked on your specific model but on 99% of vehicles the water pump is run by the timing belt so it will need to be removed to replace the pump, best bet is to get a haynes type manual if you feel competent on changing a timing belt if not best leave it to the pro's as you could do a lot of damage mis-timing an engine
50,000-60,000 miles. Whoever changes the timing belt, recommend buy the kit (not just the belt) and be careful to keep timing marks aligned.
