That they both commit a crime that comes to light years later and alters their lives is the similarity between Oedipus in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.) and Nora Helmer in "A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen (March 20, 1828 - May 23, 1906).

Specifically, Oedipus self-defensively kills five people on his way from Delphi to Thebes. He learns years later that it is the first of two horribly prophesied events in his life: killing his father and marrying his mother. The self-knowledge and public exposure leave him a broken man personally and professionally.

Nora Helmer likewise makes the mistake of committing a crime, in this case forgery. Its revelation years later opens Nora's eyes to the oppression, repression and suppression in her marriage. It spurs her husband Torvald to ever greater heights of selfishness and self-righteousness.

That they break the law to help their families but that one fails and the other succeeds in rebelling against close male relatives are the similarities and differences between Antigone in "Antigone" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.) and Nora Helmer in "A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen (March 20, 1828 - May 23, 1906).

Specifically, Theban Princess Antigone breaks the law to bury her brother Polyneices. She defends her family, the gods and Theban traditions. But her revolt against her uncle King Creon leads to her death. In contrast, Nora Helmer makes it through her law breaking and rebellious activities.

Specifically, Theban Princess Antigone defies her uncle, King Creon, by burying her brother Polyneices. She disobeys an unjust royal edict of non-burial of the disloyal Theban dead when she obeys a pre-existing royal law. Nora Helmer likewise makes an effort to help her troubled family by securing a loan. But she signs for her already dead father because women are not allowed to get loans on their own.

That they both are arrogant, narrow-minded and stubbornis a way in which Antigone and Creon are similar in "Antigone" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).

Specifically, the term arrogance describes an exaggerated sense of self, pride. The description fits Theban Princess Antigone when she respects the gods but disrespects her uncle, King Creon, who is the god's earthly representative in Thebes. At the same time, her uncle is equally arrogant when he issues an edict that contradicts divine will and Theban traditions. Neither one will budge from their respectively narrowly defined positions so they are equally stubborn.

That they both challenge their city's ultimate power figure and that they commit suicide as a result of punishment for their rebelliousness is a similarity between Antigone in "Antigone" by Sophocles 9495 B.C.E. -- 405 B.C.E.) and Brutus in "Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare (Baptized April 26, 1564 - April 23, 1616).

Specifically, Theban Princess Antigone and Roman Senator Brutus (June 85 B.C.E. - October 42 B.C.E.) respectively challenge the dictatorial rule of King Creon and Julius Caesar (July 13, 100 B.C.E. - March 15, 44 B.C.E.). Each one is going to be executed. Each one resorts to suicide, before which they acknowledge the role of Zeus the chief god in life and death.

The main differences between Antigone and St Joan of Arc [ca. 1412-May 30, 1431] are the ways in which they dealtwith their fates, and the ways in which they died. Antigone was sentenced to life imprisonment in a walled-up cave. She chose to commit suicide not too long after her confinement. St. Joan of Arc was sentenced to be burned at the stake. And that was the way in which she died. The similarities between Antigone and St. Joan of Arc are more than just a few. Both defined their lives by respect to a higher moral authority. Both empathized with the suffering of people who had no defenses. In the case of Antigone, it was respect for the dead. In the case of St. Joan of Arc, it was independence for an entire nation. Both experienced betrayal by their own people. In the case of Antigone, it was a relative. In the case of St. Joan of Arc, it was a patient enemy. Both faced unjust sentences to death by hideous means. And both left such an impact on their contemporaries that their stories were passed down from generation to generation, for the telling in all places and all times.

That they both have experience with unburied family members is the similarity between Antigone in "Antigone" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.) and Niobe in Greek mythology.

Specifically, Theban Princess Antigone experiences the pain of seeing her brother Polyneices' body left unburied and above ground. Princess Niobe likewise feels the pain of seeing the bodies of her children unburied and exposed to weather and wildlife. In both cases, the disrespect ultimately traces back to gods feeling offended and finding a way to make mortals suffer.
