The computers name must be unique for all computers on the same network
Most first generation computers had no operating system. When they did, it was usually just something called a Batch Monitor, all it did was sequence through several jobs one at a time that had been submitted in a batch. The computer companies saw no need for any form of operating system, so the machine's users had to write them all themselves. It was not until the second generation computer that computer companies supplied operating systems for their computers and the earliest of these were simply adaptations of operating systems written by users of first generation computers with a few extensions.

Ovbiously, all computer need an operating system, it's just like the life in the dead body. For interaction between user and computer or between applications and computer , there must exist some interface. Operating system provides that interface to applications by providing an environment to run the applications and providing the hardware resources they need. OS provide interface to users by providing a medium to user to interact with computer.
A major operating system (OS) is Microsoft Windows. But, personally, I avoid Microsoft like the plague, and all my computers use various Linux distributions: especially on my main computer, the latest Ubuntu distribution - and all for free, without the need to register with anyone!
