Helena was a Christian and the mother of Constantine the Great. When she was in her 80s she led an expedition to the Holy Land to search for those locations where Our Lord was born, suffered and died as well as relics of Our Lord. She is said to have discovered the True Cross of Our Lord as well as a number of other important relics. With funding from her son, Constantine, she had churches built over these sacred sites.
