Following his ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, Hillary devoted most of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through his efforts, many schools and hospitals were built in Nepal.
Sir Edmund Hillary went on to climb 10 other peaks in the Himalayas in 1956, 1960-61 and 1963-65. He also reached the South Pole, as part of the British Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, in January 1958. Hillary devoted much of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust which he founded and to which he gave much of his time and energy. Through his efforts he succeeded in building many schools and hospitals in this remote region of the Himalayas.
