The largemouth is generally somewhat larger at maturity, and the mouth, when closed, extends beyond the back of the eye. Largemouth are more of a dark greenish color on the back, black lateral line, pale underbelly. Largemouth can tolerate warmer water.
The smallmouth's mouth, when closed, extends to the front of the eye. It is a bronze or brownish colored fish, with tiger like stripes on the flanks. Gnerally considered the better fighter of the two when hooked, although both species are excellent gamefish.
Largemouth bass grow twice as big as smallmouth bass overall. World record smallmouth is 11 lbs and change I think, where world record largemouth is right under 25 lbs
They can, but do not do so in the wild. Hatcheries have produced a hybrid between the two, called a tiger bass or mean mouth bass.
