For most monofillamet lines just tie any knot right to the spool of the reel with the bail open. reel it in until you notice the line starting to coil, the flip the spool of line over, reel some more. flip as needed. If you use some superlines, like fire line, you have to put on 5 feet or so of mono line on the reel, then tie the two lines together
make sure all the line is off of the reel before you start(obviously). then string the line through the eyes of the rod and the around the spool. You would pull the line around the spool in the direction the spool spins when reeling, so say you are looking at it from the left side of the reel, when you reel it spins clock-wise so you would put the line over the top of the spool come around and tie a knot to hold it in place. At this point I would suggest having someone hold the spool that has the new line on it and then you reel your rod until the line is about 1/8 of an inch away from the top or right side of the reel. hope this helps
Loading line on a reel. First tie your line to the drum of the reel with the bail arm up. When line is tied to drum close bail arm. And reel line on to reel. Tip; When loading a reel , you should ensure that the line comes right to the edge of the drum. This reduces friction against the edge of the drum when casting. Makeing it easyer to cast. I don't b think the tip is correct. If you load line to edge of spool it will blow off, the instructions that come with reels (spinning & bait caster) say to fill to 1/8 inch of top. Instructions that come with reels are only guide lines that also state that the line should be wound on so that it is even with the edge of the reel. The tip is also from personal experience and has been proven to work best.
What kind of catfish? If your a beginner then probably channel and/or bullhead. For channel catfish I'd use 16 pound line (less depending on how big the targetted fish are.) For bulllheads 4-10. For both kinds just tie on one or more hooks and use the tag end to tie on a 1/4 ounce weight. For hooks I say 1 size circle hooks for bullheads and maybe size 4 for channels. Hope this helps. Also for bullheads a bobber and split shot works if you know the depth of the lake.
Long line fishing is a commercial fishing style. Long lines can be miles in length. A float is set up at either end, sometimes with a light, the line is paid out and hooks are baited. The line is set out for a period of time and then is reeled in. Fish caught on the line are unhooked and collected. The advantage is that the line does not need to be tended when it is set out. The length makes it likely that some fish will be caught somewhere along its' length. The disadvantage of using long lines is that many fish are caught that are not commercially usable. They are discarded into the ocean. This can be a wasteful process if the lines are set out poorly.
