You have to know what country issued the coin or bill, and what its date is. To explain, over half a dozen countries have currency called the peso but they have different conversion rates versus the US dollar. In addition many of them have revalued their pesos (sometimes more than once) so you need to know what the exchange rate was at the time the currency was issued. For example, Mexican pesos issued before 1993 are worth only one one-thousandth (1/1000) of current pesos!
