Wire rope, or steel cable is a technology that evolved from old steel chains. Traditional chains were prone to wear and breakage, which could cause damage or weaken a structure. Wire rope was invented in Germany by a mining engineer sometime between 1831 and 1834 to be used in a local mine. The original process twisted metal around a hemp core to provide extra stability to an already existing technology. Further designs removed the hemp core and replaced it with other metals.
