A yes or no question is a question that requires either a yes or no answer. Some examples of yes or no questions are:

Do you like Bananas?

Does Kristen have brown hair?

Did Bobby scratch the CD?

Can you lift over 100 pounds?

Is Cathy able to knit?

Questions that are not yes or no questions require more than a yes or a no. These questions are called short answer questions. Some examples of short answer questions are:

How do you make a paper airplane?

Why does Jerry eat apples so much?

Where did she get that pretty scarf?

Who is that stranger in the blue vest?

Yes-No questions are closed questions. They do not encourage further answers. Yes-No questions likely make awkward and short conversations. Examples of closed Yes-No questions might be:

  • Did you sleep well
  • Did you eat breakfast
  • Do you walk to school
  • Do you like our teacher
  • Don't you just hate fire drills
  • Were you able to talk to her
