The mintmark on a Morgan Dollar is located on the reverse below the wreath near the bottom of the coin, just above the word "DOLLAR"

A Morgan Dollar without a mintmark was minted in Philadelphia. "CC" means it was minted in Carson City. A "D" indicates the coin was minted in Denver. An "O" refers to New Orleans, and an "S" is for San Francisco.

The mint mark on any coin indicates where the coin was manufactured. On Sacajawea dollars, there are 3 possible mint marks;

P = Philadelphia

D = Denver

S = San Francisco (proof coins only)

Also, remember that the coins are brass - they have no gold whatsoever.

Regardless of denomination or issuing country the mint mark on any coin is a letter, letters, or symbol indicating where the coin was struck.

Not all coins have mint marks, and determining what they are (or are not) can sometimes be challenging - but it's easy for Morgan dollars. The mint mark position always above the letters DO in DOLLAR, on the back. Possible letters are:

  • No mint mark = Philadelphia
  • S = San Francisco
  • CC = Carson City (up to 1893)
  • O = New Orleans (up to 1904)
  • D = Denver (1921 coins only)
