The field of nursing is an ever-growing realm of possibility and opportunity. Because there are so many different specialties and positions offered to individuals with nursing degrees, many nursing professionals maintain that it is the perfect medical position.

Depending on the level of certification a nurse obtains, the occupation can present a number of different scenarios. A registered nurse (RN), for example, is able to specialize in a particular area or may elect to work in a more general field instead. Flexibility is a major benefit of becoming a registered nurse. A licensed practical nurse (LPN) is able to perform many of the fundamental, hands-on work that is commonly associated with nursing. This includes taking vitals from new and existing patients, administering medication and shots, monitoring a patient's responses to tests and medicines, and keeping track of important medical charts. Many individuals who start out as LPNs work in the field for a period of time before deciding to continue on as an RN, gaining the additional certification while working at a clinic, doctor's office, or hospital.

The skills required of a nurse do include more than those obtained during school. A nurse must exhibit exceptional bedside manner, courteous care toward patients of all ages, and an ability to multitask under stressful conditions. Keeping a level head is key and other members of a cohesive medical team will grow to rely upon the skills of their nurses to keep operations flowing smoothly. Daily work for a nurse varies from one day to the next, and maintaining composure and integrity under duress is of critical importance.

There are a number of career options offered to registered nurses. These include (but are not limited to) emergency care, psychiatric care, home health care, addiction care, Diabetes management, and medical surgical care. Other nurses choose specialty positions such as cardiac and vascular nurse, radiology nurse, transplant nurse, orthopedic nurse, ophthalmic nurse, and dermatological nurse. Depending on your particular interests and skill set, you may choose any one or more of these. In addition to this list, there are innumerable other areas of the nursing field that are being pioneered today, offering an even broader range of care and specialty to individuals interested in the rewarding path of nursing.
