History: Newspapers originated for that purpose...a paper that could be distributed with news. News informed and educated the community. News informed the community of issues of their concerns, developments, politics, tax and legislative issues, births, marriages, deaths and other worthwhile matters. Originally news papers did not have advertising. I currently cannot provide history of the origins of advertising in newspapers. Consider first, newspapers were free. Then newspapers then begain to be sold as a business / income / [employment]. Eventually advertisements were an inspired form of revenue enhancement driven either by the merchants or the publisher. The cost of the newspaper purchase could be subsidized because the advertisers were kicking in monies toward the bottom line of the publisher [see Randolf Hearst] . It was a win - win - win. The publisher had a cash stream to pay for presses, paper, ink, staff. The advertiser's purchase of DISPLAY or classified ads generated [or hoped to] increased awareness and sales revenues / profits. The readers / consumers / subscribers received their NEWS for a subsized / affordable price as well as information where to efficiently find their consumables / discounts / values.

FINALLY NEWSHOLE definition: NEWSHOLE is the percent of newspaper space that can be devoted to NEWS, information, features...other than ADVERTISING. Without advertising, there would not be a NEWSPAPER product that the public could afford to purchase. Advertisers and NEWSPAPERS enjoy a symbiotic relationship. Based on a well calculated balance of production expenses, revenues from sales to readers and revenues from advertiser's purchase of display ads, classified ads [and in most recent history] insert and flyer distribution - the publisher can enjoy profits from their enterprise far beyond previously imagined by publishers who had a 100% NEWSHOLE because their newspaper contained NO advertising.

It is the space that needs to be filled with news stories, articles, or reports to meet the publication or broadcasting schedule.
