No fumes. In the days before desktop publishing came out, publishing shops all smelled really bad: hot type shops had big open containers of molten lead, and cold type shops had wax fumes and the various photo chemicals they needed to develop the film and typesetting paper.

No typesetters dying of lead poisoning. Linotype operators had the nasty habit of dying soon after they got good at it.

It's quicker: the pages come out of the output device all put together, rather than having to set them up in hot-metal chases or paste them up on boards.
