The upper part of the ear (helix) is made of stiff cartilage and provides a firm structure to keep the ear open in order to capture sounds. The earlobe only has to dangle down, and provides little if any hearing utility. Some individuals have barely any earlobes at all. The main functions of the lobule are to keep the ear warm and to provide a location for balance nerves.
