Chemically speaking, rust is Hydrogen Oxide. Which can be useful in several applications. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I think it was or can be used to make bombs or some sort of flammable substance.

in case of iron: the iron oxide is less stable than iron

in case of alluminum: the aluminium oxide act as protective layer over alluminum....

hence we won't require any protective method.
