Even though Mercury is closer to the Sun than Venus, Venus is actually hotter because of its thick atmosphere that traps heat, creating a greenhouse effect. This causes Venus to have a higher average surface temperature than Mercury despite being farther from the Sun.

What is one way that Mercury and Venus differ?

One way that Mercury and Venus differ is in their atmospheres. Venus has a thick atmosphere primarily composed of carbon dioxide and clouds of sulfuric acid, which creates a strong greenhouse effect. In contrast, Mercury has a very thin atmosphere mostly made up of oxygen, sodium, and other trace elements.

How much hotter does it get on Venus' then on Mercury?

Venus is hotter than Mercury, with an average surface temperature of about 467°C compared to Mercury's average surface temperature of about 167°C. This is due to Venus' thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide, which creates a greenhouse effect that traps heat and raises temperatures to extreme levels.

How is Venus hotter than mercury because Mercury is closer to the sun than Venus?

Venus is hotter than Mercury due to its thick atmosphere, which traps heat from the sun, creating a strong greenhouse effect. Mercury lacks a substantial atmosphere, so it cannot retain heat as effectively as Venus, despite being closer to the sun.

Why is venus more hoter than Mercury?

Venus is hotter than Mercury because of its thick atmosphere composed mostly of carbon dioxide, which creates a strong greenhouse effect. This traps heat inside the planet, leading to extreme surface temperatures that are hotter than Mercury, despite Venus being further from the Sun. Mercury, on the other hand, has a very thin atmosphere that cannot retain heat as effectively.

Why are Mercury and Venus hotter than Earth?

Mercury and Venus are hotter than Earth due to their proximity to the Sun and their particular atmospheres. Venus has a thick atmosphere that traps heat from the Sun, creating a strong greenhouse effect. Mercury lacks a significant atmosphere, so its surface temperature varies greatly between its scorching daytime and freezing nighttime temperatures.

How much hotter does it get on Venus than mercury?

Venus is typically about 460°C (860°F) hotter than Mercury. Venus has an extremely thick atmosphere that traps heat, leading to its incredibly high temperatures despite being farther away from the sun than Mercury.
