After purchasing a beautiful set of earthenware (16 place settings plus serving pieces), I began to notice a moldy smell coming from the cabinet. I re-washed everything, but the problem continued. I then started noticing black marks along the unfinished bottom edge of the pieces. After doing some research we found that earthenware is very porous and the water from the dishwasher was being absorbed into the unglazed portion of the plate or bowl. When stacked (even if seemingly completely dry), this water would seep out and be trapped between the plates. Because we had so many place settings, the pile did not always rotated and the items that were least used would develop mold. The initial "solution" from customer service was to store the pated upright or stack upside down (essentially trapping the water). Neither of these were practical storage solutions, so they allowed me to return them for store credit. I no longer buy earthenware because of this experience.
The bottom ring of an earthenware plate may smell moldy due to moisture getting trapped underneath, which creates a damp environment perfect for mold growth. To prevent this, ensure the plates are fully dried after washing and stored in a dry, well-ventilated area to avoid moisture buildup. Regularly inspect and clean the entire plate, including the bottom ring, to prevent mold and odors.
A "dank" smell typically refers to a musty, moldy, or earthy odor that is often associated with damp environments or certain types of vegetation like cannabis. It can be described as strong, unpleasant, or pungent.
the olfactory bulb is located above the cribriform plate
The cribiform plate is a bony structure in the skull that contains small holes through which olfactory nerve fibers pass to connect the nose to the brain. Its main function is to allow for the sense of smell by transmitting olfactory signals to the brain.
You can tell if a carrot has gone bad if it becomes soft, discolored, slimy, or moldy. It may also have a foul smell. If you notice any of these signs, it's best to discard the carrot.
The cribriform plate is a sieve-like structure in the ethmoid bone that allows olfactory nerve fibers to pass from the nasal cavity to the brain. This allows for the sense of smell to be detected and interpreted by the brain.

My son's sweat smells moldy, mildewy...so I came to this site by way of a search on moldy sweat smell. My only clue is that I read a book on autism many years ago, can't remember the title now, and the author, (the mother of the autistic boy) said her son's sweat had a mildewy smell. I'm searching for more info on this.
