You do not need to put an onion root in water, also cutting its roots would not have done any favours to the onion. If you keep the onion in dry and aired environment it will start to sprout naturally and can then be planted.

∙ 13y agoWhen you cut the onion root and place it in water, the root cannot continue to grow because it has been severed from the plant's vascular system which carries nutrients and water to the root for growth. Without this connection, the root lacks the necessary resources to regrow.
A cutting is a piece of stem that can be used to grow a new plant. It is usually taken from a parent plant and can be placed in soil or water to develop roots and eventually grow into a new plant. Hormones or rooting agents may also be used to promote root growth in the cutting.
The peace of ivy placed in water to root is an example of vegetative propagation, a method of plant reproduction that involves the growth of new plants from existing plant parts, such as stems or leaves. In this case, the ivy cutting will develop roots in water and eventually grow into a new plant.
The cells in an onion tip but not the onion itself are usually actively dividing cells located at the growing tip of the onion root, known as the root cap cells. These cells help protect the delicate meristematic cells responsible for root growth and can often be found in the root zone of plants.

Unlike many other vegetables, onions can be used to regrow new onions by planting either a whole onion bulb or part of the onion that contains the root mass on the bottom. Once planted and hydrated, the roots on the bottom of the onion will begin to grow, and green onions will form out of the top of the vegetable. Onions can be used to grow new onions either using water - which is called hydroponic growing - or traditionally, using soil.
To grow blue spruce from cuttings, take 4-6 inch cuttings from the current season's growth in late spring to early summer. Remove the lower needles from the cutting, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, and plant it in a mixture of sand and peat moss. Keep the cutting moist and in a shaded area until roots develop, then gradually expose it to more light.

Onion root tip cells are typically rectangular in shape with a distinct rectangular nucleus located towards one end. They often have a clear central vacuole surrounded by a layer of cytoplasm and a cell wall.
