Aluminum foil heats up during highlights at the hair salon because it is a good conductor of heat. When placed in close contact with the hair and the coloring chemicals, the foil helps to speed up the chemical reaction that lightens the hair. The heat generated by the foil helps to open up the hair cuticle, allowing the bleach or color to penetrate more effectively.
