Ethiopia is on the East African Rift system. This is the eastern part of Africa being pulled away from the rest of the continent.

As it pulls away the continental crust thins causing faulting and allowing magma to rise to the surface causing volcanic eruptions.

Ethiopia sits on the East African Rift, which is part of the larger Great Rift Valley system. This geological feature creates ideal conditions for volcanic activity, as tectonic plates are pulling apart and magma is able to rise to the surface, leading to the formation of many volcanoes in the region.
