Ozone or O3 is an unstable and poisonous molecule of Oxygen that is formed from an electric discharge or exposure to ultraviolet radiation-It is found naturally in the atmosphere

O3 is also produced in the lower atmosphere by the photochemical reaction of many pollutants and is highly dangerous and reactive.

  • Ozone was discovered by by Christian Friedrich Schönbein in 1839 - 1840 Gordon Miller Bourne Dobson did who did important work on ozone. He came up with the Dobson unit.
  • Depletion of the ozone layer was identified by the US Academy of Sciences in 1976 as being in agreement with the available data.
  • The ozone hole was discovered by Joseph Farman (team leader), Brian Gardiner, and Jonathan Shanklin in 1984 (reported in 1985).
  • The "hole" is not an actual hole, but a thinning of the layer near the poles during their respective winters. The cause is the lack of energy from the sun reaching the layer. Ozone decays with time, so requires energy to be reformed. This is a natural process that has been occurring since there has been oxygen in Earth's atmosphere.

Ozone was discovered by Christian Friedrich Schönbein in 1840. It was later found to have various relations, including being both a pollutant in the lower atmosphere and a protective layer in the upper atmosphere that shields the Earth from harmful UV radiation.
