Neptune's atmosphere has zones like Jupiter, and the dark spot aka the "Great Dark Spot" is about the size of the Earth. It's caused by a storm much like Jupiter's Great Red Spot only much smaller.
The lighter colored clouds of methane crystals in the upper atmosphere is simply being blown away by this storm to reveal the darker layer of gases underneath.

∙ 14y agoThe current Dark Spot on Neptune is located in the Northern Hemisphere of Neptune. The Great Dark Spot and the Small Dark Spot have disappeared. Dark Spots on Neptune are constantly disappearing and forming. Former Dark Spots can still exist as cyclones and look like a cloud but will have lost its darkness. In this way the Great Dark Spot may still exist but only as a cyclone. Again, it may be lost forever.
