Scientists find fossils by searching in areas where sedimentary rocks, such as cliffs, hillsides, or quarries, are exposed. They use geological maps and knowledge of the age of rock formations to target specific time periods. Once a potential fossil site is identified, paleontologists carefully excavate and study the rocks looking for any signs of preserved ancient life.
