Indonesia was the first country to be hit by the tsunami. It took place off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The epicentre for this was off the west coast of Sumatra. The other countries that were hit by this were: India (western coast), Burma, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Andobar and Nicobar Islands, Thailand, Maldives, Seychelles, Malaysia and countries on the Eastern coast of East Africa - patricularly Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania.
The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami hit at around 7:59 am local time in Indonesia, 8:49 am in Thailand, and 10:53 am in Sri Lanka.
Approximately 230,000 people are estimated to have died in the 2004 Indonesia tsunami.
