One BIG telescope. The rings of Uranus are very faint and that far from the Sun there isn't a whole lot of light. The easiest way may be by going to the Hubble Space Telescope web site at hubblesite.org.

To see Uranus' rings, you would need a powerful telescope with at least an 8-inch aperture. The rings are faint and best viewed under dark, clear skies. Look for them when Uranus is at opposition, which is when it is closest to Earth and brightest in the sky.

The rings of Uranus were discovered on March 10, 1977. William Herschel reported seeing them 200 years earlier, but it is unlikely that he would have been able to detect them with the telescopes available at that time.

This was found out when Uranus covered a star. Five times before and after the main event, the light of the star dimmed. Because of the symmetry of the dimming, a group of rings was the obvious suspect.
