Some fossils (mostly shells) have been known for thousands of years.

It is known that some of what we now call dinosaur bones were known in the middle ages, but the church called them fakes from the devil made to confuse people.

Paleontologists first began studying fossils in the 1800s.

The taxon Dinosauria was formally named in 1842 by paleontologist Sir Richard Owen, who used it to refer to the "distinct tribe or sub-order of Saurian Reptiles" that were then being recognized in England and around the world.

In 1676. A huge thigh bone (femur) was found in England by Robert Plot, a Professor of Chemistry at Oxford. He knew it was a huge bone, but he thought that it came from a giant man or woman. Based on his description, scientists believe it was the lower end of a thigh bone from a Megalosaurus. A report of this find was published by R. Brookes in 1763.
