Summer Solstice is a day in the year, generally either June 20th or June 21st, on which the Sun reaches it's most northern "apparent" position on the Earth's surface. It would end at the end of that day.

Since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, its summer solstice (the date with the longest length daytime of the year) is the date of the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere.

In 2009, this occurred on December 21.

There are two solstices. They're both points in the sky, and they can be marked

on a map of the stars. The solstices are the points where the center of the sun is

when it gets as far north or south as it can get. The sun passes one of the two

solstices on June 21 or 22, and the other one on December 22 or 23.

The event in June is the official beginning of astronomical Summer in the northern

Hemisphere, and astronomical Winter in the southern Hemisphere.

In 2011, the sun got there on June 21, at 1:16 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

The summer solstice in 2009 ended on June 21st, which is typically the longest day of the year. After this date, the days start to get shorter as the Earth's axis begins to tilt away from the sun.
