When the Earth is in between the Sun and the Moon it is called a lunar eclipse. The Earth keeps sunlight from reaching the Moon. The Sun light is kept from the Moon by the Earth, so a shadow is cast on the moon. There are three kinds of lunar eclipses, penumbral, partial, and total.

  1. Penumbral lunar eclipse - In a penumbral lunar eclipse, no part of the moon is fully covered by Earth's shadow, the shadow just dims part of the Moon.
  2. Partial lunar eclipse - In this eclipse, only part of the moon passes through Earth's shadow.
  3. Total lunar eclipse - The entire moon passes through Earth's shadow. The moon becomes a red/orange color. This is known as the "blood moon". A "blood moon" occurs because the Earth's atmosphere filters in red sunlight and filters out blue light. This causes us to see a red moon.

When the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun it is called a solar eclipse. The Moon is smaller than the Earth so the shadow only covers a part of the Earth's surface. There are four types of solar eclipses, total, partial, annular and hybrid.

  1. Total solar eclipse - In a total solar eclipse, the moon covers the entire sun. It can be very damaging to the eye if you watch the total eclipse without eye protection. This type of eclipse can only be seen from a very small area on earth about 160 kms (100 miles) wide and 16000 kms (10000 miles) long.
  2. Partial solar eclipse - A partial solar eclipse occurs when only part of the Moon covers the Sun
  3. Annular solar eclipse - This eclipse happens when the moon is smaller in comparison to the sun. The Moon covers the centre of the Sun and a bright ring of sunlight can be seen.
  4. Hybrid solar eclipse - A hybrid solar eclipse is when an annular eclipse turns into a total eclipse.

Why do you see different phases of the moon if the same side is always facing the earth?

The phases of the moon are the result of the ever-changing positions of the Earth, moon, and sun relative to one another. When the moon and the sun are on opposite sides of the earth (whereby the sun, earth, and moon form a straight line), a full moon occurs. When the moon and sun are on the same side of the earth (whereby the sun, moon, and earth form a straight line), a new moon occurs.

Where is the moon in relation to Earth and the sun during new moon?

At the "new" moon, the moon is between the Earth and the Sun. When it is on a direct line between the Earth and Sun, that new moon becomes a solar eclipse.

When does earth have an eclipse?

When the Sun, Earth and Moon line up exactly, an eclipse occurs. If the alignment is sun, Moon, Earth, then it is a solar eclipse. If the alignment is Sun, Earth, Moon, then we have a lunar eclipse.

Did you have a new moon last night?

There is a new moon during the *daytime* and this occurs about every 29.53 days. The exact time and date will vary by location on the Earth. For the new moon phase, the Moon is along the direct line between the Earth and the Sun, so that there is practically none of the illuminated surface visible from Earth.

Which phase of the Moon occurs when Earth the Moon and the Sun lie on the same line?

A new moon occurs when Earth, the Moon, and the Sun are aligned, with the Sun shining on the moon's far side, making it appear dark from Earth.
