The plates slide on the lithosphere, which is the rigid outer layer of the Earth made up of the crust and upper part of the mantle. This layer is broken into several pieces known as tectonic plates that move around due to the convection currents in the mantle below.

What layer of Earth's mantle do plates slide over?

The lithosphere is the layer of Earth's mantle that plates slide over. It is divided into several pieces called tectonic plates that float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere below. Movement of these plates is responsible for many geological phenomena such as earthquakes and mountain formation.

What layer in earths mantle do the plates slide over?

The asthenosphere.

What layer are the continents sliding on?

The continents are sliding on the asthenosphere, which is a partially molten layer beneath the Earth's lithosphere. This movement is due to the slow convection currents in the asthenosphere causing the tectonic plates to move over time.

What layer of Earth makes up the plates and what layer causes them to move?

The plates are made up of the Earth's lithosphere, which is the outermost layer of the Earth. The movement of these plates is caused by the flow of the semi-fluid asthenosphere layer beneath the lithosphere.
