The Aleutian chain of islands in Alaska stretches across the meridian of

180 degrees longitude into the eastern Hemisphere, but does not cross

the International Date Line.

If it did, then the state of Alaska would have two different calendar dates ...

a total living nightmare.

The International Date line has been defined with several zigs and zags in it,

in order to avoid crossing any cities, towns, villages, islands, or states.

The U.S. territory of American Samoa is the only U.S. island group that stretches across the international date line. This means that American Samoa and its neighboring islands are in different calendar days at the same time.

I can't swear that the International Dateline doesn't cross a prominent sandbar,

an uninhabited atoll, or a large albatross colony on a dung-caked rock somewhere

in the Pacific, but I do know that it doesn't cross any island with known human inhabitants.

What does the international date line have to do with time travel?

The International Date Line helps maintain a consistent time and date across the world by creating a boundary where the date changes. When traveling across this line from east to west, you may need to adjust your date forward by a day, which can create a sense of time travel or skipping a day.

Which American state is nearest to the international date line?

Hmmm. Assuming the originally defined location of the date line, it would be whatever city is closest to the intersection of the prime meridian, (Greenwich Meridian) and the equator. That point is in the ocean, just south of the northwest extention of the African continent. The city might be in dispute if we take modern re-definitions of the date line into account. The island nation of Kiribati made an extremely large (close to 30 degrees of longitude) change to the date line's location in order to insure that it was the first nation to experience sunrise in the new century. This move is not universally accepted as legitimate.

Does the International Date Line bend around the Aleutian islands?

Yes, the International Date Line bends around the Aleutian Islands to keep them in the same day as the rest of Alaska. This deviation ensures that all territories within the United States share the same day.
