The worst volcanic eruption in recorded history is believed to be the eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia in 1815. This catastrophic event led to the deaths of tens of thousands of people and had widespread impacts on the global climate, causing the year 1816 to be known as the "Year Without a Summer" due to the resulting cool temperatures and crop failures.

One of the worst volcanic eruptions on record was the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa. Krakatoa was an island in Indonesia, then a Dutch colony, between the islands of Java and Sumatra. The eruption on August 24, 1883 was one of the most powerful in recorded history, second only to the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora. So much magma was drained from beneath Krakatoa that most of the island collapsed beneath the sea. This generated huge tsunamis that were responsible for most of the 36,000 deaths from the eruption. This eruption also produced the loudest sound ever recorded, which was heard more than 3,000 miles away.
