British captain George Vancouver (for whom several places are also named) gave it its European name in 1792 while exploring on HMS Discovery. He named it for his friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier Jr. (1741-1808).

Vancouver also named two other high mountains:

Mount Baker : named for his ship's 3rd Lieutenant Joseph Baker

Mount St. Helens : named for British diplomat Alleyne Fitzherbert, 1st Baron St Helens (1753-1839)

The much less used Native American name is Tahoma, the same root name as Tacoma.
