Longitude measures the east-west angle between your location and the Prime Meridian.

Latitude measures the north-south angle between your location and the equator.

With these two numbers, you can pin the location down to any point on earth, within a few feet. They are used to report exact locations on the earth.

For example:

-- to report the position of a ship at sea

-- to keep a record of a location, in order to return to it or to direct others to it

-- to mathematically calculate the distance between two locations, given their lat/lon coordinates

-- to calculate the correct pointing angles for a satellite TV dish

-- to calculate the direction to head out from your location, in order to fly the shortest route to another location
