Because it gets darker earlier and takes longer for the sun to rise, we set the clocks back an hour because it takes less energy to power buildings/lights/etc. during daylight than it would be to keep the time strict.

Daylight Saving Time was originally implemented to make better use of daylight during the longer days of spring and summer, thus saving energy and reducing the need for artificial lighting. Turning the clocks back in fall helps to align daylight hours with waking hours and can reduce energy consumption during the darker months.
