Mercury poisons and affects the health of humans and animals alike.

Poisons the water and other organic life.

I would need a book to describe the long term and harmful effects mercury has had to humans and other life.

Good place to look is to visit Sri Lanka, those people don't have a say in what goes into their land fill, however I believe most of their health problems have been directly caused by Mercury waste in the majority of land fills.

The poison is released in slow process as studies and research show.
