Chloroplasts contain the light sensitive pigment chlorophyll (amongst others).

These are responsible for photosynthesis; in this process sunlight, carbon dioxide and water are combined to form simple sugars (glucose). This is the basis of all autrotrophic organisms on earth, it is also the basis for most food chains on earth.

Without this process life as we know it on earth would not exist.
