Eckman currents are currents created by Eckman spiral which affects the currents' directions and velocities from the surface downward. The wind drives the water movement on the surface at 45 degree to the movement of the wind. Under Coriolis effect (effect caused by the earth rotation around its axis) the water moves to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left on the Southern Hemisphere. The deeper layer movement is affected by the layer right above it and moves slower. The net of water movement is 90 degree of the wind movement.

The Ekman current is a wind-driven ocean current that moves at a 90-degree angle to the direction of the wind due to the Coriolis effect. It is named after Swedish oceanographer Vagn Walfrid Ekman who first described this phenomenon. The Ekman current plays a crucial role in redistributing heat and nutrients in the ocean.

What are the components of a coastal circulation cell?

The components to a Coastal Circulation Cell are:1.Onshore current: Current from the open sea to shore2.Longshore current: Current that flows parallel to the shore transporting sediments3.Rip Current: Current that takes overflow of sediments to the foreshore or offshore where a Sand Bar or Barrier Island can be formed.

Which type of flow works in opposition to Ekman transport in a gyre?

Geostrophic flow works in opposition to Ekman transport in a gyre. Geostrophic flow is the balance between the pressure gradient force and the Coriolis force, causing water to move at an angle to the wind direction. This balances the net transport of water caused by Ekman transport.

What is ekman upwelling?

Ekman upwelling is a process in which winds push surface water offshore, causing deeper, nutrient-rich water to rise to the surface. This upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water supports high levels of primary productivity and can increase biodiversity in marine ecosystems. It is named after the Swedish oceanographer Vagn Walfrid Ekman who first described this phenomenon.

How is wind driven ekman transport related to coastal upwelling and downwelling?

They are both wind driven, if the Ekman Transport is moving in towrds the shore then downwelling will pull water from it and move it down and out. While when the Ekman Transport is moving out away from shore up welling will pull water up and feed the Transport. Note all directions are based on 90 degrees to the left or right fo the wind direction depending on wich Hemisphere.

What is a measure of liquidity?

the two ratios that measure liquidity is acid test and current ratio. the acid test ratio is current assets- stock/ current liabilities the current ratio is current assets/ current liabilities
