Answer 1

The mass number of a nuclide is the sum of the mass of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Protons and Neutrons have a mass of approximately 1 Atomic Mass unit (electrons are not included since the mass relative to the mass of a proton and neutron is to small to count in the total mass. The atomic number of an atom corresponds to the number of protons in the nucleus, and that is the difference.

Answer 2

Mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an isotope. Atomic number is the total number of protons in the nucleus of each atom of an element.

What are some differences between atomic mass and atomic number?

Atomic mass is how much it weighs, the atomic number is how many protons/electrons it has

What is atomic mass and the number of calcium?

Calcium has atomic number of 20, an atomic weight of 40.078 and an mass numbers of 40 - 48 inclusive in its isotopes. Atomic number is the count of protons in the nucleus. Mass number is the count of protons plus neutrons. The question refers to atomic mass rather than atomic weight. Atomic mass normally refers to the mass of a specific isotope of an element and is related to the mass number. Atomic weight ( or relative atomic mass as it is termed by IUPAC) the average mass of naturally occurring isotopes of an element. The relationship between mass number and atomic mass is defined in terms of the Atomic mass unit which is in simple terms 1/12 of the mass of a 12C atom. If you need to find out more about the relationship between mass number and and atomic mass you need to read the article "atomic mass unit" in wikipedia.

What is the difference between mass number atomic mass and atomic number?

Mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus. Atomic mass is the average mass of an element's isotopes taking into account their relative abundance. Atomic number is the number of protons in an atom's nucleus, which determines the element's identity.

Why can you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass and get the number of neutrons?

Not the atomic mass but the mass number (of course, these values are similar - not identical). The mass number is the sum between the number of protons and the number of neutrons. As a consequence:Number of neutrons for an isotope = Mass number - Number of protonsThe number of protons is equal to the atomic number.

What is the difference between the atomic number and the atomic mass?

The atomic number represents the number of protons in an atom's nucleus, determining its chemical properties and element identity. Atomic mass is the total mass of an atom, which includes the sum of its protons, neutrons, and electrons.
