These are two groups of what are called "inner transition elements" because the differentiating electron that is in one of the group but not in the one with the next lower atomic number goes into an f orbital, even though the atom already contains all of its valence electrons in its s and p orbitals

The Lanthanide and Actinide series are at the bottom of the Periodic Table of elements because if they were where they were supposed to be, then the table would be way too long. The Lanthanide series actually goes between Lanthanum and Hafnium, and the Actinide series goes between Actinium and Rutherfordium.
