Here are just a few: Mercury: Turns on it's axis only 1 1/2 times during it's "year" - 1 day = 58 earth days Venus: Rotation on axis is retrograde - The sun rises in the west and sets in the east. Earth: Has the largest moon relative to planet size. Mars: Polar ice caps - possible life Jupiter: Largest in the system - Has a storm 3 times the size of earth that has been going on for 300 years. A small "solar system" in itself. Saturn: The rings Uranus: The south pole point directly at the sun. (relative the other planets, it's laying on it's side) Neptune: Discovered by application of Newton's Laws of gravity before actually being spotted. Fastest winds in the Solar System - 2000 mph.

Mercury is the smallest and closest planet to the sun. Venus has a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide, causing a runaway greenhouse effect. Earth is the only planet known to support life. Mars has the largest volcano and canyon in the solar system. Jupiter is the largest planet and has a strong magnetic field. Saturn is known for its prominent rings made of ice and rock particles. Uranus rotates on its side, resulting in extreme seasonal variations. Neptune is the farthest planet from the sun and has the strongest winds in the solar system.

There are many web sites that list specific data for each planet. My favorite is nineplanets.org.

Mercury is small and doesn't have enough gravity to have an atmosphere.

The temperature of the atmosphere around Venus is increased by high levels of carbon dioxide, which causes the greenhouse effect.

Astronomers believe there is a good chance Jupiter's moon Europa contains liquid water under a thick layer of ice.

Mars used to be more similar to Earth.

Here are a few unique characteristics about each of the 8 planets in our Solar System:

Mercury

• has no atmosphere at all, so the temperature is about 750 F (400 C) in the daytime and -300 F (-180 C) in the nighttime. Also, with no protection from asteroids, Mercury's surface is heavily cratered.

• smallest planet

• planet with fastest orbital period (approx. 88 days)

Venus

• has very thick atmosphere of sulfuric acid

• hottest planet, with constant temperature of about 870 F (460 C)

• only planet that rotates counterclockwise

• only planet in which its rotational period is longer than its orbital period (rotational period is approx. 243 Earth days; orbital period is approx. 225 Earth days)

Earth

• only planet with perfect conditions to support intelligent life

• only planet (so far) with human civilization

• only planet with 1 moon

• only planet not named after a god or goddess

Mars

• only planet with 2 moons

• planet with largest volcano (Olympus Mons)

• planet most suspected by human beings for intelligent life

• planet with most elliptical orbit

Jupiter

• planet with most moons (a total of 67 moons)

• largest planet

• planet with shortest rotational period (9 hrs & 30 mins)

Saturn

• only planet less dense than water

• only planet with a day of the week named after it (Saturday)

• planet with the second largest number of moons

• second largest planet

Uranus

• third largest planet

• planet with coldest temperature (-330 F or 200 C)

Neptune

• planet farthest away from the Sun

• planet with longest orbital period (about 160 Earth yrs)

• planet with strongest winds
