Volcanic eruptions can cause immense destruction and loss of life to surrounding areas through lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudlfows, and falling ash. Very large volcanic eruptions can release enough gas into the atmosphere to disrupt the climate. The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia led to abnormally low temperatures over the following years, which became known as the "Year Without a Summer."
