Good question! In the late 1800s, a british archelologist found clay pots from a layer of rock and rubble in Tel-Helasy . He later compared them to other pots that his family owned and discovered a new form of dating layers of rock. He used this method on other relics from the ancient world; this method is still used today.

Does radioactive dating tell the relative age of rocks?

Radioactive dating techniques, such as radiocarbon dating or uranium-lead dating, provide an absolute age for rocks by measuring the decay of radioactive isotopes within them. This helps determine the actual age of rocks rather than their relative age.

What are two methods geologist use to determine the age of a rock?

Geologists use relative dating methods to determine the sequence of events that led to the formation of rocks by analyzing the layering of rocks. They also use absolute dating methods such as radiometric dating to determine the numerical age of rocks by measuring the decay of radioactive isotopes within them.
