Another hazard is weak structures like buildings DO NOT GO INTO A BUILDING DURING AN EARTHQUAKE! IT CAN FALL!

∙ 14y agoA hazard that can occur in a city after an earthquake is building collapse due to structural damage. This can result in casualties and further damage to infrastructure.
The city that was hit by a devastating earthquake in 1931 was Napier, New Zealand. The earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, caused widespread destruction and resulted in significant loss of life.
San Francisco was destroyed by an earthquake in 1906, known as the Great San Francisco Earthquake. The earthquake, measuring around 7.8 on the Richter scale, caused widespread devastation and fires that ravaged the city.
Tokyo was the city destroyed by the earthquake of 1923 in Japan. The earthquake, known as the Great Kanto Earthquake, caused widespread devastation and fires in Tokyo and surrounding areas, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of lives.
Napier was the city that was hit by a devastating earthquake in 1931 in New Zealand. The earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, caused widespread damage and resulted in the reconstruction of the city in the Art Deco style.
The city closest to the recent earthquake that hit Japan was Fukushima. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.3 and its epicenter was off the coast of Fukushima prefecture, causing strong shaking in the region.

The 1812 earthquake in Caracas, Venezuela, was a powerful magnitude 7.7 event that caused widespread destruction in the city, resulting in significant loss of life and damage to buildings. It serves as a significant event in the history of Latin American earthquakes due to its impact on the region.

Mexico City Earthquake of July 28, 1957
An earthquake, which devastated Mexico City.
The earthquake in Tokyo occured because, Tokyo lies on three tectonic plates. When those plates come together, seperate, or slide past each other an earthquake happens. However, Tokyo is also a city in a major fault zone!

Earthquakes often cause gaslines to burst and electricity cables to fall. These (and the usual dropped candles, damaged heaters and simple arson) can result in fires that will cause massive further damage to any stricken area if they are not controlled e.g. parts of the city after the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.
Depends on the strength of the Earthquake, the distance between the center of the quake and the city, the kind of soil the city is built on and how well the city is built.
An earthquake can cause more damage in one location than another due to differences in soil type, building construction, and distance from the earthquake epicenter. Soft, loose soil amplifies the shaking, while buildings that are not earthquake-resistant are more likely to collapse. Additionally, proximity to the epicenter can result in stronger ground shaking.
The 1985 earthquake caused significant damage to Mexico City, Mexico.
