One characteristic of all life is that it can grow and develop. Living organisms have the ability to increase in size and complexity over time.
Carbon dioxide is NOT a life characteristic.
all of life relies on the sun. all living things (so far) need energy that the sun provides or will be effected by not having the sun.(ex. cave dwellers need food, algae, if we have no sun. then all of them would die)

Organization
One characteristic of all life is that it can grow and develop. Living organisms have the ability to increase in size and complexity over time.
Breathing is commonly associated with living organisms, as it is essential for obtaining oxygen and removing carbon dioxide. However, there are some life forms, such as certain bacteria or single-celled organisms, that do not breathe in the same way animals do. Therefore, breathing is not considered a universal characteristic of life.
The characteristic of organization ties all branches of science together. Living organisms and systems exhibit complex organization at various levels, from molecules to cells to ecosystems. This shared feature allows scientists to draw connections and study phenomena across different fields of science.

The alternation of generations in vascular plants involves a multicellular sporophyte and a multicellular gametophyte stage in their life cycle. Both stages are dependent on each other for reproduction.
Adaptation
No, it is not a charactersitc of being alive; it is an event that will happen to all living things at some point, but it doesn't define life.
From what I can tell, the most prominent characteristic of life is its changeability and unpredictability. These factors affect just about everyone's life, no matter when or where they live or lived.
all living things use & need energy
Primarily so that there can be more Life.
Decay is not considered a functional characteristic of life. Decay is the breakdown of organic matter due to the activity of decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi. Life is more commonly associated with functions such as growth, reproduction, response to stimuli, and metabolism. Decay is a process that occurs after the cessation of biological functions in an organism.
