When two elements combine chemically, they form a compound with new physical and chemical properties. The elements undergo a chemical reaction where their atoms bond together in specific ratios to create a stable compound. The type of bond formed (ionic, covalent, or metallic) depends on the elements involved and their valence electrons.

When several different elements come together it is called a compound. Compounds can be made up of two or more atoms. There are even compounds that have the same number of atoms but have different shapes, called Isomers. xxx

It depends which elements they are, generally the further apart on the Periodic Table they are the more violently they will react with each other but some elements such as those in group 8 (the noble or inert gases) are essentially unreactive. If the two elements do react they will form a Chemical Compound.

it became an compound

Specifically, an element which can combine with itself to create a compound is called a diatomic element.

The diatomic elements are summarized by the acronym: "HONCl BrIF": Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine and Fluorine.
